Bejaia is a town bordering the Mediterranean Sea, 180 km east of Algiers. It is épnonyme capital of the province of Bejaia and the largest city of Kabylia.
Formerly, in Roman times the city was known as the Saldae the Middle Ages it became a very prosperous city to the capital including large Muslim dynasties. The time of the French colonization the city was called Candle because of the quality of the candles made of beeswax.
In terms of population, Béjaïa is the largest city in Kabylia including 187,076 residents at the last census in 2005 Due to its geographical location, it is also the largest manufacturing center in the region focusing many industries through the presence of one of the largest oil and commercial ports in the Mediterranean.
The city of Bejaia has an international airport located 5 minutes from the city, a port for travelers, a train station and a bus station.
Bejaia has a university named on behalf of Abderrahmane Mira (a martyr of the war in Algeria). The institution has a staff of 698 teachers for 22,792 students (2006).
The university currently has seven faculties:
- Faculty of Technology.
- Faculty of Arts, Humanities and sport.
- Faculty of Law.
- Faculty of Economics, Management Science and Commerce.
- Faculty of Medicine.
- Faculty of Exact Sciences.
- Faculty of Nature and Life.
The city of Bejaia has important archaeological remains that testify to its ancient history, can be cited:
- The Fort of Cabah.
- The remains of the fortified walls of the Gate Fuka.
- The golden Worn (The Gate of the Sea).
- The Fort Musa (Fort Barral)
- The Roman Cistern.
- The Mihrab of the Mosque Ibn Toumert.
- The Cippe Romain (tombstone).
The natural heritage of Bejaia includes:
- The National Park Gouraya.
- The Corniche.
