Making The Most Of The Perfect Fort Myers Climate

By Jony Mozen

If there is one state in the USA that has really earned its nickname, it's Florida, the Sunshine State. It's no wonder that it's not only a popular holiday destination but also the destination of choice for those who want to live a healthier, happier outdoor lifestyle. With its many sunny days, the Fort Myers climate makes this city the perfect option if you want to enjoy the best Florida has to offer.

Fort Myers is one of the principal cities in southwest Florida. Its central location makes it the perfect base from which to explore the theme parks of Orlando, the nightlife of Miami, the Everglades and the legendary fishing and diving of the Florida Keys. It's quite a cosmopolitan place with a good mix of people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds.

The perfect subtropical to tropical climate in Fort Myers means you should remember the sunscreen, because an average year here sees 271 days with sunshine. It's not surprising then that Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and Harvey Firestone all chose to spend their winters here. You can also rub shoulders with the variety of sports personalities who have now made this city their home.

The weather in Fort Myers is at its best in spring. This is when the mercury reaches the eighties and there is little enough rainfall to make you want to be on the beach or in the water as often as possible. If you prefer being on the sidelines, head to the stadiums where the Minnesota Twins or the Boston Red Sox have their pre-season training. Otherwise, admire the fluttering critters that have found sanctuary at the Butterfly Estates.

Come summer, you'll find that the Fort Myers weather heats up well into the upper nineties. Humidity rises too but luckily there are frequent thunderstorms and quick, heavy showers to cool things down a bit. If you're planning on going out to sea, it's wise to check the weather forecast since there may be hurricanes that cause rough seas and very strong winds.

The cooler months are perfect for outdoor pursuits such as golfing, biking or hiking. This is the dry season, which means that humidity levels are much more comfortable too. Maximum temperatures hover in the upper seventies or so but at night, the temperature rarely drops to below 50 degrees. It's a good season to visit the winter estates of Edison and Ford to see just why they preferred Florida this time of year.

The city has every facility you can dream of, with plenty of restaurants and bars, especially along the waterfront in the downtown area. On those days when you want to give your skin a rest from the sun's rays, you'll find a good selection of retail outlets, among them the Edison Mall. Another good way to spend a day is with a visit to the Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium or to the Imaginarium Science Center. Public transport is good and you'll also find that this is a very bicycle-friendly city.

The nearest airport is the Southwest Florida International Airport, which has connections to destinations all over the USA as well as international destinations. Accommodation options are plentiful too, with something for every budget. If you decide to invest in property here, simply call in at one of the many local real-estate agents.
