You can purchase a bag that has already been outfitted, add to it, or put one together yourself. Folks modify their survival bags over time to ensure that they have a good amount of supplies. It is not easy to know how to begin gathering the right supplies. However, if you think about the basic needs in any survival situation you will be off to a great start.

The packs that are sold are designed to aid folks in an emergency. There are enough supplies to sustain an individual for tree days. However, many people plan for packs to provide support for much longer. Keep in mind that the bag should not be too heavy to carry. A pack that is heavy will not help in a situation that is desperate.

Look for the pack that starts with the basics needed to sustain you for three days. The first item that is included without question is water. Water is a necessity in any circumstance. When survival is the focus, water immediately becomes a valuable commodity. The minimum amount needed for one person per day is one liter so you should make sure you have no less than three liters.

If packing for more than the 3 days it is important to have a purification system for water. The system can be a filter, iodine tablets, boiling the water. Packing a collapsible bottle gives you a way to store extra water. Coffee filters will stretch the life of the water filtering method. Bottled water may also an option.

For a seventy two hour bag energy bars and freeze dried meals will be adequate. The freeze dried foods require boiling water to reconstitute them. They are very light so they do not add extra pounds to the pack, and they will last a very long time. If you are setting up for disaster assistance you will need to plan for a longer term solution.

Pack clothing that is similar to what you would carry for a backpacking weekend. For three days you should pack a hat, one pair of long pants, two pair of socks, a long and short sleeved shirt, a warm and waterproof jacket, and long underwear. Remember to consider the climate in your area so you pack accordingly.

A tent or tarp will keep you dry and warm when you sleep. Include a sleeping bag or bedroll. Make sure you have a first aid kit. Have a few ways to start fire, small pot for cooking, something to cut wood, two flashlights, and a knife. Also carry along some type of weapon for self defense. The weapon is your personal choice, take what you are comfortable with.
